See the article about Ariel House in the West Seattle Herald Our annual Ariel House fundraising dinner event is coming up on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 at McCormick & Schmick's Harborside Restaurant. See our Upcoming Events page for details! Ariel House is one of the first homes in the country especially designed for people living with MS. People with MS seeking a barrier free, low cost home to share with other individuals suffering mild to moderate effects of MS, will be able to live with the aid of a totally accessible design, along with the supportive services of the Multiple Sclerosis Association of King County (MSA) and Multifaith Works. The home is located in the Admiral District of West Seattle and is designed to accommodate people with limited mobility, who use wheelchairs, walkers or scooters or who have other mild to moderate MS symptoms. Applications... The MS Association is happy to accept applications to Ariel House. Applicants must have MS and be able to perform their own activities of daily living. To receive an application, or to request more information, please call Merrill Ringold at 206-633-2606, M-F, 9-5. First in the Nation... Together, the Multiple Sclerosis Association of King County (MSA) and Multifaith Works have developed one of the first housing and supportive services programs in the country for people moderately disabled by multiple sclerosis. The joint venture is meant to capitalize on the expertise of both agencies: Multifaith Works' experience in housing people disabled with AIDS and the MSA's experience in caring for people with MS. A generous donor has contributed a house to use for people disabled by MS. The donor decided to make the gift after touring several of Multifaith Works' AIDS Project houses. Shortly after acquiring the house, the National MS Society Greater Washington Chapter joined as a primary sponsor, with a contribution of $25,000. About Ariel House... The home is a beautiful 5-bedroom house with an elevator, extra-wide halls, two wheel-in bathrooms and a specially designed kitchen, barrier free appliances and living areas. Attention has been given to the landscaping and front entry so that residents can use the raised garden and enjoy the park-like setting of the home. Ariel House is home to five residents, with some rooms large enough to house couples. Located in West Seattle, the house is close to shopping and bus lines, a park, and other amenities. Supportive services are being provided both through state-funded caregivers and volunteers. The MSA provides case management, rehabilitation and social work services, as well as personal assistance and support. A special Multifaith Works CareTeam has been formed to assist residents of this house. Emotional support volunteers from Shanti, a program of Multifaith Works, are also being utilized. How You Can Help... Through the generosity, time and talent of many donors, the MS Housing project is now up and running. We ask individuals, families and businesses to continue supporting this important project by making contributions to Ariel House. While we continue to fundraise through special projects and grant requests, it is through the many supporters of the MSA and Multifaith Works that we hope to raise the bulk of our operating funds. Your help is needed right now. You can contribute through our secure online donation form. Visa, AMEX and Mastercard accepted. Those who wish to send in their donation by mail should earmark their donation for "Ariel House" or "MS House Project" c/o the MSA of King County, 753 North 35th St., Suite 208, Seattle, WA 98103, or call the MSA at 206-633-2606.
