MSA Volunteer Rebecca Pursley...

Rebecca Pursley

When Rebecca Pursley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1993, her neurologist suggested that she contact the MS association to get reading materials and participate in the Newly Diagnosed Series.  Her experience was so positive that she and her husband, Rich, decided that they wanted to give something back to the MSA.

“The Association made such a difference to me when I was first diagnosed,” says Rebecca, “that we’re really happy to be part of their team now."

Rich and Rebecca bring many years of experience in the teaching field to their volunteer work, while Rich offers skills in video and computer technology, which has translated into many practical applications for the Association.

When Rebecca was forced to give up her job as a teacher in 1994 due to her MS, Rich began his own home business in order to stay home and help out his wife of 15 years.

Thus, he founded Open Channel Instructional Services, which develops training materials (mostly videos) and works with many non-profit organizations.

Rebecca put her own experience navigating the convoluted process of applying for Social Security Disability and her years of teaching to good use, becoming a speaker for the MSA’s SSDI workshops.  Rebecca also created her own “SSDI Tutor” to help walk people through the SSDI application process.  In addition, she and Rich have been working on a website version.

“I still learn a little more each time,” Rebecca adds about the SSDI process, “and I enjoy continuing to be able to teach, while I’ve been meeting wonderful people.  I’m inspired by the folks I help."
